DAVID R OULTON

DAVID OULTON A PERSONAL PROFILE

Born and bred on a dairy farm on the Cheshire/Staffordshire border. I kept my first cavies in an old railway carriage amongst the fruit trees on the farm's orchard - sounds idyllic and it probably was! I attended my first cavy show (Sandbach Original Small Livestock Society) in the autumn of 1964, exhibited a Self Black and two Self Goldens. Kept and exhibited Self Goldens, Self Creams, Self Beige and Lilacs, Self Chocolates, Abyssinians,  Agouties, Smooth T & Whites and Dutch during the 60's. Most notable win - four colours of self at the ESCC adult stock show at Derby in 1969.
Five years at Bristol in the early 70's studying to be a vet. Started judging at the same time (as a Southern Cavy Club judge) quickly graduating to the National, English Self and several other panels. I spent the first twelve years of my working life (principally a cow vet) at Tutbury in Staffordshire.
At this time I bred cavies under the tutorage of Tony Tipper. Had a lot of success with Goldens and Abyssinians and did an awful lot of judging. My greatest memory behind the judging table was making Joan Radeglia's Beige BIS at the NCC adult stock show, (I've never shied from controversy) - in my opinion the best example of its breed I have ever seen.

Spent 17 years in the wilderness from 1983, first in Tutbury, then Fakenham in Norfolk and finally by the mid 90's back in the North West at Madeley. I say the wilderness because I became a member of that peculiar breed of people that keep exhibition cavies but don't show them and don't go to shows
(in contrast to that very very peculiar group that go to shows and judge cavies but never keep any).

This "pecular"returned to the show scene in 2000, still keeping the same old breed but a changed breed that has evolved and improved beyond recognition. I have been lucky to have many wins with Self Goldens in the first years of this millennium - including a very coveted best self at Doncaster in 2004 with Maigold. One of my greatest pleasures from the cavy fancy was in 2007 to be made ESCC secretary. I have seen the cavy fancy decline in strength and numbers over more years than I wish to remember, I shall be happy if I can infect a few others with my enthusiasm for breeding and showing cavies, and hold back the decline in numbers as the world of cavies will inevitably change.
